Putting the puzzle pieces together - wallpaper

Wallpaper

We had agreed to go to check out the possible wallpapers. The outcome of the trip was actually depressing. We use to have a very similar taste about things but that day it did not seem to match at all. I told him that we are going to look as long as it takes to find the wallpaper that we both like and want and not going to compromise with this.
As me being rather minimal and boring in my taste, the other half proposed solutions which were totally in the other extreme. So apparently we both need to consider something else and meet in the half way. Still not settling with something just to pick something but also actually liking it.
We visited many other stores over the time, individually, together, together with boys and finally picked the wallpaper combination that we liked.
I am still not sure how it will turn out as this seems actually a little bit darker that I would have wanted and also has a small blue feeling in it, but we will see once it is on the wall.
The one on the right with darker color is going to be only on one wall where the bed is going to be. Rest of it is going to be the boring grey.

Now the next step is to find curtains that match with the wallpaper.
While looking for the one wallpaper, we visited several stores. It is just crazy how the service you get can be so from one end to the other. Some stores happily provided the samples to go home with. At the same time others said that they don't do it.
Me, wanting to have all matching colors, needed to get samples, in order to start finding the curtains that I want. So before actually buying the wallpaper, I wanted to find curtains to go with it and I was actually ready to change the wallpaper in case I don't find curtains to fit it. So, I took the samples and traveled to the curtain shop. Regarding curtain shop, I did not have a doubt in my mind where to turn to.
About this, in my next post.

Master bedroom design

Background and higher vision

Here is the really first project that we are doing from zero and have actually taken time to plan it and think through.
The bedroom is roughly 15m2. It has two windows, one of them has balcony door together with it. The windows are not tall from floor, just regular ones. At the moment we have just whitish walls and one big bed in the room. Windows have window blinds that we got first thing before we moved in.
As I am mostly the mastermind in this project and just feeding the ideas to the other half so I can see what his reaction is going to be, I am feeling the pressure to succeed and actually achieve what I have in mind. No idea, how it will actually turn out.

I am planning in the first phase:

  • redo the walls with wallpaper
  • get proper curtains
  • get full carpet on the floor
  • replace the bed and get bedspread
Second phase will be about furniture such as:
  • nightstands
  • dresser with drawers
  • night lamps

But the truth is that I have no real experience in decorating and designing the interior and it is going to be my very first. No experience, no training, nothing -  only thing I have is my own instinct and logic and imagination and taste that I try to detect.
The funny fact is about why I actually agreed to start with out bedroom. I believed that other things in the house are more important and our bedroom can  pretty much be the last one. Little bit after last Christmas we decided to buy the lamp that I had checked out some time ago. The journey to find the lamp has been also very long and we had been keeping our eyes open long time to find one that we both like. Finally when I found the one I liked, not just settled with, intalled it and replaced the bulb, we ended up in the situation when I no longer could not ignore the depressing look of the room. The lamp was actually screaming out loud for us to get the room done.

I had definately been fantazising over the years what I like and this has been dreaming mostly. At the moment when we actually reached the decision that we are going to work on our bedroom first, I started to put actual effort to trying to figure out what do I actually want our bedroom to look like. One thing that I have concluded is that in real life to start planning your bedroom, is not easy at all once you actually start doing it. As long as you are just dreaming and fantazising, it seems so simple.
My main challenge at first was to choose the bigger picture to bring the design together.
I have been scrolling and searching the Pinterest and it is the best place to get ideas and at the same time this is the place where you get your head messed up because there are sooooo many nice things and good ideas and perfect solutions but you can only choose one.
Over the time I have had in mind something brownish-goldish, white, grey, darker and ligher. Also some little bit extreme solutions for my taste look very cool so they make me try it out as well.
So after considering different ways how to continue, I decided to go with grey.
I am rather traditional type of person and don't feel confortable to experiment with extreme solutions. I like modest approach that a lot of people could think of as boring. I would rather add some cool details but cannot do that either before the bigger visual is not finished. For example, I cannot plan little details such as candles or picture frames etc before I don't have colors and most of the solution ready. Then I can start thinking about how to add details.

Starting points to stick with:

I knew from the beginning that I prefer modest approach but the feeling of the room has to be cozy and warm not so much modern and cold and not too proper.

I also knew that for master bedroom I prefer to have wallpaper because for me this is helping to make it cozier.

I also knew that I need two sets of curtains (tulle curtain and side curtain).

I have always been wanting the carpet that covers entire floor because this also is the symbol of cozyness for me.

I knew that the colors of the room have to match together perfectly.

Also knew that I love the natural light, so the overall impression of the room has to be rather light.

Intro

Here is the deal.

I have never been the writing-type of person, not to even mention blogger-type of person. So pardon if my writing is not the smoothest or shiniest. :)
I guess life brings you things on your way just so you will never feel too compfortable, especially if you are ready for challenges yourself. So let's call this my little experiment to challenge myself.

So why is this now the time for me to challenge myself with writing and blogging?
Because there are cool and interesting things happening in my life that I find some people could find useful for themselves as well. Maybe not. But at this point in my life, I have been interested in things like that and why not to share my experience.

This blog is going to be about home improvements and the little projects that we are working on. Slowly but still.
We moved to the semi-detached house (double house? the individual house where you share one wall with neighbours? two family houses?) 3,5 years ago.
Before we were living in the rental appartment that had 2 bedrooms, livigroom with open kitchen, quite large balcony and sauna in the bathroom. We really liked the place we lived in, the neighborhood and enviroment. We were expecting the second child and were not planning to move anywhere. We had planned that our boys will be sharing the room and did not really think about getting a house anytime soon because we had not saved enough money for this yet. But life had its own plans for us. Unexpectedly we found ourselves in the situation where we had a possibility to rent the double house almost for the same price as the appartment and we could not turn down this deal.
By now we have bought the house with the help of the bank and it is our home.
As the house was brand new and did not need any renovation or anything, we had our priorities somewhere else and did not focus too much about the interior. Now we have been thinking more and more about how to actually get our home functional as much as possible together with nice interior factor. At the moment we have whitish walls and the furniture that we have bought and ordered according to the needs trying to follow some kind of vision how we want our home to look like.

After some time and discussions about where to start and where is the pain the biggest we have decided (at first against my will and as a result of the compromise) to start from our bedroom. We have so many different needs and things to do that it is actually very hard to prioritize. So, we have decided to start from our own bedroom as boys have their minimum needs and more covered. I am not going to say anything yet about what I think about their rooms by now and how I would want to change them :)

So, in this blog I am planning to share the challenges that need to be solved while we are improving our home. And I don't settle with solutions that are good enough. If I do something, it needs to fit my vision and be a match. Close enough is not good enough.
